Every year, from October 4 to 10, World Space Week brings people around the world together to celebrate humanity’s achievements in space science and technology.

Why only these dates?

The dates have a historical connection to two important milestones in space exploration. October 4, 1957, marks the launch of Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite. October 10 marks the anniversary of the entry into force of the Outer Space Treaty in 1967, which established fundamental principles for the peaceful exploration and use of outer space.

World Space Week was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999. Its purpose is to highlight the contribution of space science and technology to human development, encourage education and interest in science, and promote international cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space.

What Is the Theme of World Space Week 2026?

The theme of World Space Week 2026 is “Rocket Revolution.” The theme focuses on the rapid changes taking place in space-launch technology and the growing accessibility of space.

For decades, launching a spacecraft into orbit was an extremely expensive and technically demanding process, largely carried out by national space agencies. Today, the sector is changing rapidly with developments such as reusable launch vehicles, commercial launch services, private aerospace companies and rideshare missions.

Reusable rockets can potentially reduce launch costs by allowing major components of a launch vehicle to be recovered and used again. Rideshare missions allow multiple satellites to share a single launch, while the growth of commercial space companies has increased the number of organizations developing launch and satellite technologies.

Together, these developments are changing how frequently and economically humanity can access space. During World Space Week, organizations across the world conduct educational programs, exhibitions, lectures, astronomy events, rocket-building activities, webinars and classroom projects to increase public understanding of space science.

Why Is World Space Week Celebrated?

World Space Week has several important objectives:

• Educating the public about space science and the benefits of space technology.
• Encouraging STEM education and inspiring students to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
• Promoting international cooperation in space exploration and education.
• Increasing awareness of how satellites and space-based systems support life on Earth.
• Encouraging public interest and support for space science and exploration.

Space technology is already part of everyday life. Satellite systems support telecommunications, navigation, weather forecasting, television broadcasting, disaster management, agriculture, environmental monitoring and scientific research.

Therefore, space exploration is not only about visiting other worlds. Much of its practical value is connected to improving our understanding of Earth and supporting human activities on the ground.

India’s Remarkable Journey in Space

As we celebrate humanity’s achievements in space, it is impossible not to look at India’s remarkable journey. India’s space program did not begin with unlimited resources or enormous budgets. It began with a vision—that space technology could be used not merely for prestige, but to solve real problems on Earth and improve the lives of ordinary people.

From communications and weather forecasting to remote sensing, navigation, disaster management and scientific research, India’s space program has grown into an important part of the nation’s technological development.

Today, India is recognized globally for its achievements in space exploration, including missions to the Moon and Mars and the development of increasingly capable launch vehicles and satellites. But India’s success was not created overnight. It was built step by step by extraordinary scientists and leaders. Among them, a few names stand out as pillars of India’s space journey.

1. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai — The Visionary Who Dreamed of an Indian Space Program

Dr. Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai (1919–1971) is widely regarded as the Father of the Indian Space Programme.

At a time when India was still a young nation dealing with enormous developmental challenges, Sarabhai saw something that many others could not yet see—the potential of space technology to transform life on Earth. He strongly believed that a developing country like India could not afford to stay away from space technology. Under his leadership, India began developing the foundations of a national space program. He played a crucial role in establishing institutions and nurturing the scientific ecosystem that eventually led to the formation of ISRO in 1969.

Sarabhai also founded the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad, which became an important center for scientific research. His vision was remarkably practical: India’s space program should focus on using advanced technology to address the country’s real-world challenges.

His contribution was recognized with the Padma Bhushan in 1966. He was later awarded the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 1972. Sarabhai’s greatest legacy was the vision & firm belief that India could use science to build a better future.

2. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam —The Missile Man of India

Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (1931–2015) was an aerospace scientist who played an important role in India’s launch-vehicle and missile programmes. He served as the Project Director of SLV-3, India’s first indigenous satellite launch vehicle. After an initial setback in 1979, the team achieved success in July 1980, when SLV-3 successfully placed the Rohini satellite (RS-1) into orbit.

This was a major milestone because India had demonstrated its ability to launch a satellite using an indigenous launch vehicle. Kalam later became one of India’s most recognized scientific and public figures. He served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007 and became particularly well known for his interactions with students and his emphasis on science, education and technological development.

3. Prof. Satish Dhawan — The Leader Who Built ISRO’s Foundation for Growth

Prof. Satish Dhawan (1920–2002) was one of the most important figures in the development of India’s modern space program. An accomplished aerospace engineer and scientist, Dhawan became Chairman of ISRO in 1972, succeeding Vikram Sarabhai.

During his tenure, India made significant progress in satellite communications, remote sensing and launch-vehicle development. The period saw important advances toward systems such as INSAT and the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

Dhawan was also respected for his approach to scientific leadership. Following the unsuccessful first experimental SLV-3 launch in 1979, he publicly accepted responsibility for the failure while allowing the project team to present the successful outcome of the subsequent launch. His leadership helped establish the organizational and technological foundations for ISRO’s later expansion.

4. Prof. Udupi Ramachandra Rao — India’s “Satellite Man”

Prof. Udupi Ramachandra Rao (1932–2017) was one of the key figures in the development of India’s satellite programme. He served as the Project Director of Aryabhata, India’s first satellite, which was launched on April 19, 1975, using a Soviet launch vehicle.

The mission represented India’s first major step into satellite technology. Rao subsequently contributed to the development of India’s satellite systems and played an important role in expanding the country’s capabilities in communications, remote sensing and meteorology. He later served as Chairman of ISRO from 1984 to 1994.

His work helped establish satellites as important tools for national development rather than simply experimental scientific instruments.

5. Dr. K. Radhakrishnan — Leading India to Mars

Dr. Koppillil Radhakrishnan served as Chairman of ISRO from 2009 to 2014, a period that included one of India’s most celebrated space achievements—the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan).

Launched in November 2013, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission successfully entered orbit around Mars in September 2014. Many of us watched this historic milestone on our television. It brought tears to many eyes because it was more than just an organization’s victory—it was a triumph for the entire nation, celebrated across the country with bursting crackers. What made the mission even more remarkable was its relatively modest cost compared with many international Mars missions.

Mangalyaan demonstrated something that would become closely associated with India’s space program: innovation does not always require enormous resources—it requires ingenuity, precision and determination.

From Aryabhata to Chandrayaan-3

India’s space programme has developed considerably since the launch of Aryabhata. The country progressed from experimental satellites and sounding rockets to increasingly capable launch vehicles and spacecraft.

The PSLV became one of India’s most reliable launch vehicles and played an important role in deploying Earth-observation and scientific satellites as well as missions beyond Earth orbit. India’s lunar programme began with Chandrayaan-1 in 2008, which significantly expanded scientific understanding of the Moon and provided important evidence of water molecules on the lunar surface.

This was followed by Chandrayaan-2 in 2019 and Chandrayaan-3 in 2023. On August 23, 2023, Chandrayaan-3 successfully achieved a soft landing on the Moon, making India the fourth country to successfully soft-land on the lunar surface and the first to reach the region near the Moon’s south polar area.

India has also expanded its scientific missions beyond the Moon and Mars. The Aditya-L1 mission, launched in 2023, is designed to study the Sun from a halo orbit around the first Sun-Earth Lagrange point. At the same time, India is developing Gaganyaan, its human-spaceflight programme.

These missions represent the continuing expansion of India’s space capabilities from satellite applications toward increasingly complex scientific and human-spaceflight missions.

Why India’s Space Journey Matters

India’s space programme demonstrates how space technology can support both scientific research and practical national requirements.

Indian satellites contribute to areas including:

• Weather and climate monitoring
• Agriculture and crop assessment
• Disaster management
• Communication and broadcasting
• Navigation
• Mapping and natural-resource management
• Environmental monitoring
• Scientific research

The development of India’s space capabilities has also contributed to advances in rocket engineering, electronics, materials science, telecommunications, computing and spacecraft technology.

The significance of India’s space programme therefore extends beyond individual missions. It represents several decades of investment in scientific research, engineering expertise and technological infrastructure.
